“Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream” debuts May 16 on Disney Channel.
The
short-form reality series will give fans a personal look at the band and should
build interest in the trio’s film “Camp Rock,” which debuts June 20 on Disney
Channel. The film will have quick encores June 21 on ABC and June 22 on ABC
Family.
A warning to Jonas Brothers fans about “Camp Rock”: Joe (center) has
a big role while Kevin (left) and Nick (right) have supporting
parts.
“Biggest challenge? I think acting in general,” Joe told reporters
Friday night at a red-carpet event at Epcot to celebrate the Disney Channel
Games. “It’s so new to us. We’re so used to performing onstage. I didn’t know
how I would do. Honestly, I got kind of nervous.” But he added, “I felt really
comfortable halfway through.”
Why did they want to do this movie?
“The one
thing that really drew us towards it was the music,” Nick
said.
Kevinjonasst_3 “Absolutely,” Kevin agreed (pictured, with Joe to the
right).
The songwriters have penned material for the Cheetah Girls and
“Hannah Montana,” the channel said.
“We listened to the songs. We thought the
music was something that was really interesting to us,” Nick said. “Especially
the song we did with the band Connect Three. That’s maybe a song that we would
do one day. So it all kind of worked out. It was good.”
And what’s the
movie’s message?
“Stay true to who you are,” Nick said.
Joe understood the
complaint that there’s not enough Nick and Kevin in the movie. “I wanted to see
my brothers more in the movie. They’re so good in it,” Joe said.
Kevin,
however, stressed the upside. “It was an extreme opportunity we got to do a
movie for the first time,” he said. “Any opportunity we would get, we were truly
honored.”
“Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream” will involve them equally. The
15 segments will run weekly.
“Camp Rock” suggests that Kevin could have a
future in comedy. He speaks a line — “What about my birdcage?” — that fans are
likely to repeat often.
Is comedy his future?
“I never thought about it,
but I really loved acting,” Kevin said. “Hopefully, we have a long future with
the Disney Channel.”
Disney Channel does not have another movie lined up with
Jonas Brothers yet, said Gary Marsh, president of entertainment for Disney
Channel Worldwide.
“I like to take these things one at a time,” Marsh told
me. “It’s nice there’s a lot of anticipation for ‘Camp Rock,’ but in my world, I
like the movie to come out, play, let the audience find it and then talk about
what the next steps are.”
He acknowledged that Joe has a more prominent role
than Kevin and Nick. “But if you’re a Jonas Brothers fan, I don’t think you’ll
be disappointed,” Marsh said. “The essence of each of them comes
through.”
You see Nick’s thoughtfulness, Kevin’s comedy and … wait, is that
really Joe?
“Joe did an incredible job of playing the disgruntled rock star,”
Marsh said. “If you meet Joe, you know that’s not who he is. He’s the kindest,
gentlest soul in the world.”
